It's official: MP gets GI tag for Kadaknath chicken meat -Ankur Sirothia |
-The Times of India BHOPAL: Now, it is official that Kadaknath, the all-black fowl, belongs to Madhya Pradesh. The Geographical Indications Registry issued certificate in this regard on Monday, six years after the filing for the GI registry on February 8, 2012. GI registered Jhabua Kadaknath Black Chicken Meat to geographical area, MP. GI registration is valid up to a period of around five years till February 7, 2022. B Manghnani, state nodal officer (poultry), directorate of animal husbandry, Bhopal, confirmed that Kadaknath got the GI indications registry on Monday. The certificate is under print and the state would get it in a fortnight. Since the GI registration is valid for five years, the state could add some more features to it, he added. After detailing the GI registry, Chennai, gave its acceptance in principle. The application was advertised and accepted in the Geographical Indications Journal, Number 104, dated March 28, 2018. Officials said as a set procedure after date of the publication of journal, 120 days' time is given for raising objection so that there is no claim after the final certificate is issued. And since it was Sunday on July 29, the certificate was issued on Monday. The black-winged fowl was a bone of contention between MP and Chhattisgarh, both of which had claimed its GI registry. While MP staked its claim in 2012, Chhattisgarh did so six months ago. Kadaknath is famous for its delicious black meat ('kali-masi'), which is supposed to be invigorating and full of medicinal properties. Animal husbandry officials in MP told TOI that it took them five years to prove that the bird originated in MP's Alirajpur. The Gramin Vikas Trust of Jhabua filed for GI patent and the animal husbandry department supported it. The Indian poultry breed is famous for its unique black colour of feathers as well as black meat, which is claimed to contain low cholesterol level as compared to the routine table chicken. CII's Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre (IPFC) at Indore, set up with the support of ministry of MSME, helped the state in filing the GI application, entitled 'Jhabua Kadaknath Black Chicken Meat'. The CII team visited the site for documenting the ground-level information for protecting Kadaknath. Kadaknath is found mainly in the tribal district of Jhabua. This poultry is reared mainly by the tribal community of Bhil & Bhilala in the districts of Jhabua and Dhar.
