Sanitary napkin vending machine at AGDC

-The Times of India

LUCKNOW: From this academic session, students of Awadh Girls' Degree College (AGDC) have a new reason to feel at ease on campus. The college has become the first in the state to get a sanitary napkin vending machine on the college premises.

"We had been approached by the company concerned around May. After sanction from the management committee of the college, we have installed the machine inside the girls' washroom," said principal Upma Chaturvedi.

The machine charges a sum of Rs 10 for a single napkin. "In cases of emergency during a menstrual cycle, we earlier had to go through the embarrassing and tedious ordeal of rules and procedures, to be followed through the college nurse," said Arushi Kumar, a BA 3rd year student, and the president of the student council.

Welcoming the forward looking thought of the college management, students have applauded the easy and accessible mode of procuring napkins.

"The issue is a personal and an inescapable one. Asking one another for a spare piece or going up to the nurse would invade our privacy. This is great!" said Shubhra Goyal, studying in BCom 3rd year. "Not all girls are outspoken about it. The shy ones face a tougher time. The step is a leap in the right direction of health and hygiene," said student Rashida Salmani.

The department of women's studies at Lucknow University (LU) has been mulling setting up a sanitary napkin manufacturing unit at one of its girls' hostel. "The machine at AGDC has made me very happy as it is not just an issue of women alone, but a matter of growing up. Our department has been thinking of setting up a unit on the lines of the work of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the Menstrual Man of India. A packet can be manufactured at Rs 10 and sold at Rs 13, so that it can generate income for the poor people working in the process too. It is still in the thought stage though," said Prof Rakesh Chandra, head of the department of women's studies.
