'School-level learning not as dismal as projected' |
-The Indian Express
Even as independent surveys continue to point fingers at the quality of education being imparted in Indian schools, the National Council Of Educational Research And Training (NCERT) Friday released its National Achievement Survey (NAS) for Class III that indicated quite otherwise. Released by the Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) Pallam Raju, the NAS report says that about 65 per cent of children were able to listen and respond correctly and about 86 per cent were able to recognise a given picture. In mathematics, 70 per cent children were able to handle simple multiplication and 84 per cent students were able to handle data relevant to their context. The survey covered over one lakh students, more than 7,000 schools across 298 districts in 34 states and Union Territories. Pallam Raju said that while several ‘NGO reports' presented an "alarming picture" of school-level learning, the NCERT survey results have indicated that the state of learning at foundational levels is not dismal as projected. Interestingly, the NCERT survey - dispelling the notion that girls shied away from Mathematics - notes that there is no significant difference between boys and girls in terms of mathematical learning and abilities. A state-wise break up of learning levels, however, indicates that the traditional BIMARU states have much to catch up even now compared to their southern counterparts. In Languages, 14 states scored significantly above the national average, of which the high performers were Tripura, Daman & Diu, Puducherry and Mizoram. Fifteen scored significantly below the national average, of which the low performers were Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan and Haryana. |
