Speaking to the reporters after inaugurating a hostel for girls in the Institute of Food and Dairy Development of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) at Koduvali near Red Hills, Dr. Ayyappan said secondary agriculture would provide value addition to farming products, creating facilities for primary processing and stress management in agriculture.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The value addition could be in the form of grading the products according to quality, cold storage facilities to take up primary processing and steps to control soil and water degradation. Besides this, addressing biotic and labour issues would also be given importance in the Plan, he said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Concerned over the shortage of manpower in the field of agriculture, dairy and related sectors in the country, the ICAR has plans to start a national-level education project, he said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;One thing we see is manpower shortage. So, we have to improve the course curriculum and faculty competence and develop infrastructure such as hostels. Apart from these, providing hands-on experience, skill development and student exchange programmes will form part of it,&amp;rdquo; he said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Noting that veterinary science, dairy science and agricultural engineering were three major areas that witnessed shortage of manpower, he said ICAR was considering introduction of concepts such as &amp;lsquo;farmer first&#039; and &amp;lsquo;student ready&#039; to bridge the gap between educational institutions and the industry needs.&lt;br /&gt;

Desirous of producing quality agricultural graduates who can become &amp;ldquo;agri-preneurs&amp;rdquo; in the next five year plan, he said the government was spending nearly Rs 8-10 lakh for a bachelor&#039;s degree student, Rs 12-15 lakh for a post-graduate student and Rs 20 lakh each for research students.&lt;br /&gt;

Speaking on the occasion, R. Prabakaran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS, said last year the University received more than Rs 117 crore for various projects, of which the ICAR alone provided Rs 17 crore. Even in the new women&#039;s hostel, constructed at a cost of Rs 95 lakh, the ICAR&#039;s contribution was substantial, he added.

Besides this, addressing biotic and labour issues would also be given importance in the Plan, he said.<br /><br />Concerned over the shortage of manpower in the field of agriculture, dairy and related sectors in the country, the ICAR has plans to start a national-level education project, he said.<br /><br />&ldquo;One thing we see is manpower shortage. So, we have to improve the course curriculum and faculty competence and develop infrastructure such as hostels. Apart from these, providing hands-on experience, skill development and student exchange programmes will form part of it,&rdquo; he said.<br /><br />Noting that veterinary science, dairy science and agricultural engineering were three major areas that witnessed shortage of manpower, he said ICAR was considering introduction of concepts such as &lsquo;farmer first' and &lsquo;student ready' to bridge the gap between educational institutions and the industry needs.<br /><br />Desirous of producing quality agricultural graduates who can become &ldquo;agri-preneurs&rdquo; in the next five year plan, he said the government was spending nearly Rs 8-10 lakh for a bachelor's degree student, Rs 12-15 lakh for a post-graduate student and Rs 20 lakh each for research students.<br /><br />Speaking on the occasion, R. Prabakaran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS, said last year the University received more than Rs 117 crore for various projects, of which the ICAR alone provided Rs 17 crore. Even in the new women's hostel, constructed at a cost of Rs 95 lakh, the ICAR's contribution was substantial, he added.</div>               </font>

Ayyappan, Director General Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), said here on Saturday.<br /><br />Speaking to the reporters after inaugurating a hostel for girls in the Institute of Food and Dairy Development of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) at Koduvali near Red Hills, Dr. Ayyappan said secondary agriculture would provide value addition to farming products, creating facilities for primary processing and stress management in agriculture.<br /><br />The value addition could be in the form of grading the products according to quality, cold storage facilities to take up primary processing and steps to control soil and water degradation. Besides this, addressing biotic and labour issues would also be given importance in the Plan, he said.<br /><br />Concerned over the shortage of manpower in the field of agriculture, dairy and related sectors in the country, the ICAR has plans to start a national-level education project, he said.<br /><br />&ldquo;One thing we see is manpower shortage. So, we have to improve the course curriculum and faculty competence and develop infrastructure such as hostels. Apart from these, providing hands-on experience, skill development and student exchange programmes will form part of it,&rdquo; he said.<br /><br />Noting that veterinary science, dairy science and agricultural engineering were three major areas that witnessed shortage of manpower, he said ICAR was considering introduction of concepts such as &lsquo;farmer first' and &lsquo;student ready' to bridge the gap between educational institutions and the industry needs.<br /><br />Desirous of producing quality agricultural graduates who can become &ldquo;agri-preneurs&rdquo; in the next five year plan, he said the government was spending nearly Rs 8-10 lakh for a bachelor's degree student, Rs 12-15 lakh for a post-graduate student and Rs 20 lakh each for research students.<br /><br />Speaking on the occasion, R. Prabakaran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS, said last year the University received more than Rs 117 crore for various projects, of which the ICAR alone provided Rs 17 crore. Even in the new women's hostel, constructed at a cost of Rs 95 lakh, the ICAR's contribution was substantial, he added.</div>               </font>

Ayyappan, Director General Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), said here on Saturday.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Speaking to the reporters after inaugurating a hostel for girls in the Institute of Food and Dairy Development of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) at Koduvali near Red Hills, Dr. Ayyappan said secondary agriculture would provide value addition to farming products, creating facilities for primary processing and stress management in agriculture.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The value addition could be in the form of grading the products according to quality, cold storage facilities to take up primary processing and steps to control soil and water degradation. Besides this, addressing biotic and labour issues would also be given importance in the Plan, he said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Concerned over the shortage of manpower in the field of agriculture, dairy and related sectors in the country, the ICAR has plans to start a national-level education project, he said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;ldquo;One thing we see is manpower shortage. So, we have to improve the course curriculum and faculty competence and develop infrastructure such as hostels. Apart from these, providing hands-on experience, skill development and student exchange programmes will form part of it,&amp;rdquo; he said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Noting that veterinary science, dairy science and agricultural engineering were three major areas that witnessed shortage of manpower, he said ICAR was considering introduction of concepts such as &amp;lsquo;farmer first&#039; and &amp;lsquo;student ready&#039; to bridge the gap between educational institutions and the industry needs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Desirous of producing quality agricultural graduates who can become &amp;ldquo;agri-preneurs&amp;rdquo; in the next five year plan, he said the government was spending nearly Rs 8-10 lakh for a bachelor&#039;s degree student, Rs 12-15 lakh for a post-graduate student and Rs 20 lakh each for research students.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Speaking on the occasion, R. Prabakaran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS, said last year the University received more than Rs 117 crore for various projects, of which the ICAR alone provided Rs 17 crore. Even in the new women&#039;s hostel, constructed at a cost of Rs 95 lakh, the ICAR&#039;s contribution was substantial, he added.&lt;/div&gt;&#039;

-The Hindu The focus of agriculture will shift from primary to secondary farm activities in the 12th Five Year Plan, S. Ayyappan, Director General Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), said here on Saturday. Speaking to the reporters after inaugurating a hostel for girls in the Institute of Food and Dairy Development of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) at Koduvali near Red Hills, Dr. Ayyappan said secondary agriculture would provide value addition to farming products, creating facilities for primary processing and stress management in agriculture. The value addition could be in the form of grading the products according to quality, cold storage facilities to take up primary processing and steps to control soil and water degradation. Besides this, addressing biotic and labour issues would also be given importance in the Plan, he said. Concerned over the shortage of manpower in the field of agriculture, dairy and related sectors in the country, the ICAR has plans to start a national-level education project, he said. “One thing we see is manpower shortage. So, we have to improve the course curriculum and faculty competence and develop infrastructure such as hostels. Apart from these, providing hands-on experience, skill development and student exchange programmes will form part of it,” he said. Noting that veterinary science, dairy science and agricultural engineering were three major areas that witnessed shortage of manpower, he said ICAR was considering introduction of concepts such as ‘farmer first' and ‘student ready' to bridge the gap between educational institutions and the industry needs. Desirous of producing quality agricultural graduates who can become “agri-preneurs” in the next five year plan, he said the government was spending nearly Rs 8-10 lakh for a bachelor's degree student, Rs 12-15 lakh for a post-graduate student and Rs 20 lakh each for research students. Speaking on the occasion, R. Prabakaran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS, said last year the University received more than Rs 117 crore for various projects, of which the ICAR alone provided Rs 17 crore. Even in the new women's hostel, constructed at a cost of Rs 95 lakh, the ICAR's contribution was substantial, he added.
