Two people have died and sixty-one have fallen ill after suspected food poisoning from consuming a traditional feast in Odisha.

Ganjam: At least two people have died and over 61 have been hospitalised in Odisha after suspected food poisoning. All of them had started showing symptoms following a traditional feast.

The deceased were identified as Santosh Gaud(32) and Budhia Gaud(53) of Bakharakata village.

All the sick villagers have been shifted to Dharakote Community Health Centre. Official reports say out of the 61 that are sick, 53 are from Bakharakata village and 8 are from Adamba village.

The villagers had reportedly consumed ‘danda pana’, during the danda jatra which began on the day before Chaitra Sankranti. After consuming the drink, several people started complaining of diarrhoea and stomach ailments.

Meanwhile, some villagers suspect the victims may have suffered food poisoning after consuming prasad (bhog) during a temple feast in the nearby village.
