Worse, most of the cases undergoing dialysis treatment or even kidney transplants are again in their thirties.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">This disturbing trend in AP will be analyzed as part of a marathon study that aims to unearth the magnitude of and reasons behind the alarming rise of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) among middle-aged people in the country.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is funding the study which is set to roll out shortly in Hyderabad. The study will be undertaken by a team of doctors and researchers from the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims). The other major cities chosen for the exercise are New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Jaipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The study , first of its kind in the country, will check prevalence of CKD in Hyderabad.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">A budget of Rs 50 lakh has been sanctioned for the study which will most likely take five years to complete. Doctors said that 45%-50% of CKD patients in the state are below 40 years of age. Also, 85% of all kidney transplants are being performed on patients below 40. Besides, 70% of patients undergoing dialysis under the Aarogyasri scheme are also below 40.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Doctors are of the opinion that some local and genetic factors could be responsible for the sudden spurt in the disease.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">incidence of CKD among this relatively young age group.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&quot;Around 12-13 years back, kidney patients would mostly be those over 60 years of age and with a history of diabetes and hypertension. Now, we are seeing an inexplicable rise in kidney diseases among those in their 20s and 30s. These patients have no record of diabetes or hypertension. In older patients, diabetes is the main reason for CKD,&quot; said Dr Sree Bhushan Raju, associate professor with the nephrology department at Nims. &quot;We would want to investigate the reasons. Nephrologists at Nims, who are part of the CKD Task Force formed five years back to work on a plan to spread awareness about the benefits of early, cost-effective diagnosis and treatment of chronic kidney diseases, said that it was crucial to gauge the prevalence of and reasons behind such a drastic increase that has occurred over the last eight years. "The numbers are astonishing. People are getting afflicted in the most productive periods of their lives. The major problem is that it is not getting detected early," rued a doctor. Healthcare professionals suggest that screening and early detection are key in the fight against kidney diseases. Meanwhile, Nims will also conduct a small study on prevalence of CKD in Srikakulam district. This study, also being funded by ICMR, is being undertaken on the request of Srikakulam MP K Kruparani. According to Kruparani, every third or fourth person in Srikakulam is suffering from some form of kidney ailment. Dr Bhushan said that an adjacent area of Srikakulam will also be studied to gauge the difference in prevalence.
