53.1% Rajasthan women anaemic: Study

-The Times of India

A comprehensive and multi-sectoral mechanism for control of anemia, a highly prevalent disease among adolescents and women in rural Rajasthan, has been recommended for the state.

The recommendation has ben made in a study report released by Vijay Shankar Vyas, an economist and deputy chairman of Rajasthan State Planning Board. The report titled 'Strengthening Adolescent Anemia Control Programme (AACP) in Bikaner and in Jaipur, is prepared by the Bikaner-based Ajit Foundation and supported by the United Nations Children's Programme.

As per the findings of the National Family Health Survey-III , 53.1% of the women aged 15 -49 years are anemic in Rajasthan. Moderate anemia increases the risk of maternal death by 1.35 times, and severe anemia by 3.5 times. Among the children of illiterate mothers, 44% are stunted and underweight.

The study was carried out under the leadership of Dr Jyotsana Rajvanshi, an associate professor at the Institute of Development Studies , working in rural areas of Bikaner district, covering eight tehsils, to assess the prevalence of anemia. The study was aimed at understanding the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) related to anemia among adolescent girls (10-18 years) in order to strengthen the AACP. Bikaner was selected for the study as it is a backward district in terms of health, nutrition and education . It is also a desert district with a difficult terrain and scattered resettlement habitation having presence of a large number of active NGOs networking for active outreach.
