6 dead after rain triggers landslides in Kerala; IMD sounds 'Red Alert' for 5 districts

-IndiaToday.in

Six people have died after heavy rain triggered landslides in parts of Kerala. The IMD, meanwhile, had sounded a 'Red Alert' for at least five districts in light of the situation.

Six people have died and dozens are feared missing after heavy rain triggered landslides in south and central Kerala on Saturday. The deaths were reported from Thodupuzha and Kokkayar in Idduki and Koottikkal in the Kottayam district.

In addition to floods in hilly areas of Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta, officials said the rivers Meenachal and Manimala are now overflowing.

Terming the situation as "serious", Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said the IMD has warned of widespread heavy rains in the state due to a low-pressure system that has formed over the Arabian Sea.
