A large section of these are literate and are marginal workers.

Out of these, 55.68 lakh women or 67.65% are engaged in household duties. There are 19.37 lakh women in the 15-34 age group who are students, many of them handling domestic responsibilities too, while there are 3.19 lakh dependents.

In many cases, families do not support women doing outdoor jobs. I have a seven-year-old kid and my in-laws wanted me to leave the job.&amp;quot; Another instance is that of Asha Makhija who was a lecturer in Vadodara. In her case, she was asked to resign after marriage last year as there was no financial need. &amp;quot;My husband earned enough. But my doing the job was less to do with financial need and more with financial independence. Now, I handle only household chores,&amp;quot; she says.

But the census 2011 data, which was released recently, shows that nearly 70.33% of the women in Gujarat who are in their prime working age group of 15 years to 34 years, are of no economic value for their families or state. A large section of these are literate and are marginal workers.</p><p align="justify">In this age group, only 16.75 lakh of the 1.02 crore women have jobs and are categorized as 'main workers' - or who contribute to the family's income. Astonishingly, there are 1.01 crore non-working population in the 15-34 age group in the state - those who do not contribute to the economy - and of these 82.31 lakh are women. Out of these, 55.68 lakh women or 67.65% are engaged in household duties. There are 19.37 lakh women in the 15-34 age group who are students, many of them handling domestic responsibilities too, while there are 3.19 lakh dependents.</p><p align="justify">In many cases, families do not support women doing outdoor jobs. For instance, Shobha Parmar of Ranip, who was employed with a car accessory company, had to leave her job three years ago. &quot;There was family pressure to leave the job. Men do not take responsibility to handle at least part of the household activities. I have a seven-year-old kid and my in-laws wanted me to leave the job.&quot; Another instance is that of Asha Makhija who was a lecturer in Vadodara. In her case, she was asked to resign after marriage last year as there was no financial need. &quot;My husband earned enough. But my doing the job was less to do with financial need and more with financial independence. Now, I handle only household chores,&quot; she says.</p><p align="justify">The census also reveals that in the general category, of the 19.64 lakh women in the 15-34 age group only 2.83 lakh women work. In the scheduled tribe category, there are 44.15 lakh women in the age group and only 9.19 lakh work and bring in sufficient income into the family. A senior official of the woman and child development department says, &quot;Many women in the age group are semi-literate. If the anganwadi and link worker network is strengthened by increasing daily wage and remunerations, it will go a long way in improving incomes and creating job opportunities.&quot; </p>               </font>

There are 19.37 lakh women in the 15-34 age group who are students, many of them handling domestic responsibilities too, while there are 3.19 lakh dependents.</p><p align="justify">In many cases, families do not support women doing outdoor jobs. For instance, Shobha Parmar of Ranip, who was employed with a car accessory company, had to leave her job three years ago. &quot;There was family pressure to leave the job. Men do not take responsibility to handle at least part of the household activities. I have a seven-year-old kid and my in-laws wanted me to leave the job.&quot; Another instance is that of Asha Makhija who was a lecturer in Vadodara. In her case, she was asked to resign after marriage last year as there was no financial need. &quot;My husband earned enough. But my doing the job was less to do with financial need and more with financial independence. 70% of young Gujarati women jobless: Census -Paul John & Himanshu Kaushik

-The Times of India AHMEDABAD: The state government may be celebrating the next two weeks as the 'women's empowerment fortnight'. But the census 2011 data, which was released recently, shows that nearly 70.33% of the women in Gujarat who are in their prime working age group of 15 years to 34 years, are of no economic value for their families or state. A large section of these are literate and are marginal workers. In this age group, only 16.75 lakh of the 1.02 crore women have jobs and are categorized as 'main workers' - or who contribute to the family's income. Astonishingly, there are 1.01 crore non-working population in the 15-34 age group in the state - those who do not contribute to the economy - and of these 82.31 lakh are women. Out of these, 55.68 lakh women or 67.65% are engaged in household duties. There are 19.37 lakh women in the 15-34 age group who are students, many of them handling domestic responsibilities too, while there are 3.19 lakh dependents. In many cases, families do not support women doing outdoor jobs. For instance, Shobha Parmar of Ranip, who was employed with a car accessory company, had to leave her job three years ago. "There was family pressure to leave the job. Men do not take responsibility to handle at least part of the household activities. I have a seven-year-old kid and my in-laws wanted me to leave the job." Another instance is that of Asha Makhija who was a lecturer in Vadodara. In her case, she was asked to resign after marriage last year as there was no financial need. "My husband earned enough. But my doing the job was less to do with financial need and more with financial independence. Now, I handle only household chores," she says. The census also reveals that in the general category, of the 19.64 lakh women in the 15-34 age group only 2.83 lakh women work. In the scheduled tribe category, there are 44.15 lakh women in the age group and only 9.19 lakh work and bring in sufficient income into the family. A senior official of the woman and child development department says, "Many women in the age group are semi-literate. If the anganwadi and link worker network is strengthened by increasing daily wage and remunerations, it will go a long way in improving incomes and creating job opportunities."
