A majority of these live in low and middle income countries, a recently released report has revealed.</p><p align="justify">Every year, about 20 million people across the world are estimated to require palliative care at the end of life. The majority (69%) are over 60 years of age and about 6% are children. About 78% of adults in need of palliative care at the end of life live in low and middle-income countries. The estimated number of children in need of palliative care at the end of life is almost 1.2 million. The vast majority (98%) of them live in low and middleincome countries, and within this, 83% are in the lower income groups.</p><p align="justify">Though the maximum demand for palliative care is in lower and middle-income countries, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, US and some European countries account for over 90% of the global consumption of opioid analgesics. Opioids are essential palliative care medicines. Access to opioid medication is an enormous problem with 80% of the world's population lacking adequate access to it.</p><p align="justify">The unmet need for palliative care has been mapped in the &quot;Global atlas of palliative care at the end of life&quot;, published jointly by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA).</p><p align="justify">According to the Atlas, those dying from non-communicable diseases account for 90% of those seeking palliative care at the end of life. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases account for the vast majority of adult palliative care needs and tend to predominate in the older age group.</p><p align="justify">In the case of children, those dying from congenital anomalies represent over 25% of the burden of end-oflife care, followed by neonatal conditions (almost 15%) and protein energy malnutrition (14%). The African region consists almost half of children in need of end-oflife palliative care. The estimated number of children in need of palliative care at the end of life is almost 1.2 million. The vast majority (98%) of them live in low and middleincome countries, and within this, 83% are in the lower income groups.</p><p align="justify">Though the maximum demand for palliative care is in lower and middle-income countries, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, US and some European countries account for over 90% of the global consumption of opioid analgesics. Opioids are essential palliative care medicines. 90% of people in need of palliative care don’t get it: Report

-The Times of India NEW DELHI: Globally, nine out of ten persons who need palliative care or medical care to relieve pain, symptoms and stress of serious illness don't get it. A majority of these live in low and middle income countries, a recently released report has revealed. Every year, about 20 million people across the world are estimated to require palliative care at the end of life. The majority (69%) are over 60 years of age and about 6% are children. About 78% of adults in need of palliative care at the end of life live in low and middle-income countries. The estimated number of children in need of palliative care at the end of life is almost 1.2 million. The vast majority (98%) of them live in low and middleincome countries, and within this, 83% are in the lower income groups. Though the maximum demand for palliative care is in lower and middle-income countries, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, US and some European countries account for over 90% of the global consumption of opioid analgesics. Opioids are essential palliative care medicines. Access to opioid medication is an enormous problem with 80% of the world's population lacking adequate access to it. The unmet need for palliative care has been mapped in the "Global atlas of palliative care at the end of life", published jointly by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA).
