It is felt that the huge gap between the sanctioned and actual strength of police forces in states is one of the key reasons behind failure of crime prevention.&lt;br /&gt;

Singh said the security wing of the police makes assessment on the security requirements depending on threat perception and it is an ongoing process. He, however, cautioned that there were assassination bids whenever security cover is withdrawn from (high-risk) individuals.&lt;br /&gt;

The SC on Thursday said that police personnel who were put on duty for giving security cover to VIPs be deployed for better purposes like making the roads safe for women. A bench, headed by Justice G S Singhvi, raised questions about why so many people are given police security and said that even judges of various courts would not have a problem if security personnel given to them are withdrawn and deployed on streets.&lt;br /&gt;

Figures, compiled by Bureau of Police Research &amp;amp; Development (BPR&amp;amp;D) of the home ministry, show that 14,842 VIPs across the country were protected by 47, 557 cops in 2011 as compared to 16,788 VIPs by 50,059 police personnel in 2010.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Though the number of protected persons had come down in 2011, the level of deployment made available three cops for protection of one VIP in both these years. Similarly, the BPR&amp;amp;D figures show that police persons to population ratio remained constant at 1:761 (one policeman for 761 common citizens) in both 2010 and 2011. &lt;br /&gt;

I can say if there is excess, it should be reviewed and scaled down. Similarly, the BPR&amp;D figures show that police persons to population ratio remained constant at 1:761 (one policeman for 761 common citizens) in both 2010 and 2011. <br /></div>               </font>
