                <p align="justify"><font ></font></p><p align="justify"><font ><em>SAMBALPUR: </em>In order to tide over prevailing food crisis, Agriculture Department has embarked on an ambitious plan to boost farm output in the district during the ensuing kharif. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >As per available data, paddy will be cultivated on 1,04,500 hectares of land during the forthcoming kharif against 99,533 hectares last time.<br /></font></p><p align="justify"><font >The department will give special emphasis for cultivation of high-yielding variety (HYV) of paddy to augment production.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >As per plan, high-yielding variety paddy will be sown on 1,04,200 hectares compared to 99,164 hectares last kharif. Accordingly, the department has decided to discourage growing of local paddy.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >A target has been set to grow local paddy only on 300 hectares compared to 369 hectares last season.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Besides, steps have been taken to supply 13237.10 quintals of paddy seeds during this kharif as against supply of 12791.70 quintals last season.<br /></font></p><p align="justify"><font >As the spiraling price of pulses has become headache for the consumers, the department has taken special measures for enhancing pulses production during this kharif.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >The department has set a target to grow pulses on 34,915 hectares of land compared to 34, 614 hectares last time. In a bid to encourage farmers, the department has decided to supply 58.78 per cent more pulses seeds this time compared to that last year.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Accordingly a plan has been drawn up to supply 166.43 quintals of pulses seeds, including &lsquo;arhar&rsquo;, &lsquo;mung&rsquo; and &lsquo;biri&rsquo;, to the farmers as against supply of 104.82 quintals during the last kharif.
