It mainly looks at maintaining yield and lowering dependence on pesticides and chemical fertilisers. The Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP), a government body implementing the project, is in talks with large cooperatives and retailers across the country to provide direct linkages to the produce market. The project hopes to put an entire range of produce in the market this year.

The rationale for the project is explained by DV Naidu, state project adviser, SERP: Farmers have to borrow at high interest to meet the high cost of cultivation. This is often done by pledging land as collateral. “If a farmer raises cotton on one hectare through sustainable farming, he could potentially save $250 a year in pesticide cost alone. This is 56 per cent of his annual income,” he said.

The National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture in India is interested in the practice and wants to adopt it a key national strategy. Andhra sows seeds of new revolution in agriculture by Trushna Udgirkar |
From green revolution, Andhra Pradesh wants to move to pink revolution in agriculture, with women in the primary role.
The project has started in a small way but hopes to turn 60 per cent of the cultivable area in the state over to organic farming. It will be implemented with the help of women’s self-help groups, which were in the limelight recently for highlighting the usury ways of micro-finance institutions. Already, over a million farmers have taken to organic farming under a project called Community Managed Sustainable Agriculture. In the project, a ‘best practice’ farmer provides his experience to the women groups. The government has earmarked Rs 35 crore for the project this year; it is already showing results. The net income of farmers in the project has gone up due to savings on pesticides. The women’s self-help groups, taking an active part, have been able to reduce the risk of crop failure and restore the ecosystem to an extent.
