Sources said the article, in the backdrop of strains within the party regarding the movement, was an attempt by Karat to justify the move to ride the Anna wave. The Left today organised countrywide demonstrations demanding the government withdraw the bill it has introduced.<br />

CPM leaders said the article had brought to the fore the incongruity in the party&rsquo;s stand. &ldquo;If Anna Hazare&rsquo;s movement is backed by communal forces and the corporate media and seeks to hold Parliament in contempt, why align with it?&rdquo; said a senior leader, who felt the party was committing mistakes in its desperation to corner the Congress and reconnect with the masses.<br />

Differences in the party have also come out in the reported statement of Bengal unit secretary Biman Bose. The CPM was against the manner in which Hazare was arrested but does not support the method adopted in his agitation, Bose reportedly said in Calcutta.<br />

He also said Hazare&rsquo;s movement was &ldquo;undemocratic&rdquo;, as &ldquo;laws cannot be made on maidans&rdquo;.<br />

Karat rejected the argument that since the bill was in Parliament, any movement was an attack on the House. &ldquo;This is specious reasoning. Political parties and citizen&rsquo;s organisations have the right to oppose and agitate against any bill introduced in Parliament,&rdquo; he said, adding that even the Left had resorted to protests against bills in Parliament. <br />
