Ramesh called upon the Orissa government on Sunday not to use force against the anti-Posco movement and said: &amp;quot;All parties should adhere to democratic norms and procedures... dialogue and discussion, not coercion, is as essential to ecological security as it is to democracy.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;

The proposed $12 billion steel project by South Korean company Posco requires about 4,004 acres of land. Out of the land earmarked, 2,900 acres is forest land which if destroyed will deprive the villagers of their major source of income from the betel vines.<br />

Ramesh called upon the Orissa government on Sunday not to use force against the anti-Posco movement and said: &quot;All parties should adhere to democratic norms and procedures... dialogue and discussion, not coercion, is as essential to ecological security as it is to democracy.&quot;<br />

The minister's statement came a day after thousands of villagers intensified protest against the $12 billion steel project in Gobindpur village of Jagatsinghpur district and used hundreds of women and children as shields to prevent officials from acquiring their lands forcibly.<br />
