Gokhale and Justice Ranjana Desai observed that &ldquo;it&rsquo;s a 50-year old case&rdquo; which the court didn&rsquo;t deem fit to reopen.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Residents of Nagri, where work is on to build boundary walls around plots earmarked to set up campuses for Indian Institute of Management (IIM), National University for Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) and Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), have been opposing the cradles tooth and nail, citing land acquisition and compensation issues.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Vowing not to part with their agricultural land, the tribals have been continuing their protests, often resorting to violence and disrupting construction work.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Today&rsquo;s Supreme Court decision, that effectively silences the claims of the tribals, comes as a shot in the arm of the district administration that has so far been soft on the protesters.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Ranchi deputy commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey said the administration would now work as per court and government orders.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;To my knowledge, 95 per cent work on the boundary walls of IIM and law university is over. Gokhale and Justice Ranjana Desai observed that &ldquo;it&rsquo;s a 50-year old case&rdquo; which the court didn&rsquo;t deem fit to reopen.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Residents of Nagri, where work is on to build boundary walls around plots earmarked to set up campuses for Indian Institute of Management (IIM), National University for Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) and Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), have been opposing the cradles tooth and nail, citing land acquisition and compensation issues.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Vowing not to part with their agricultural land, the tribals have been continuing their protests, often resorting to violence and disrupting construction work.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Today&rsquo;s Supreme Court decision, that effectively silences the claims of the tribals, comes as a shot in the arm of the district administration that has so far been soft on the protesters.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Ranchi deputy commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey said the administration would now work as per court and government orders.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;To my knowledge, 95 per cent work on the boundary walls of IIM and law university is over. Work on IIIT boundary wall is continuing. We will ensure all the projects get completed on time,&rdquo; he said, maintaining the administration was ready to take whatever measures required to ensure that construction work wasn&rsquo;t disrupted.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">In 2010, the high court ruled in favour of the state government when villagers appealed to it to settle the issue of compensation for land acquired in 50s. But, led by various rights groups, the villagers continued their protest, disrupting construction activities.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">They refused to part with their &ldquo;agricultural plots&rdquo;, claiming the government&rsquo;s land acquisition process, carried out in 1957-58, was incomplete. However, the state government maintained land was acquired under Land Acquisition Act, 1894.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">On April 30, the high court directed the state home department once again to resume construction of boundary walls of the three cradles. Work began on May 2, but had to be stopped because of continuing protests.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Soon after, the protesters filed a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the high court order. But today, the apex court dismissed the plea within two minutes of the case being tabled for hearing.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The Supreme Court&rsquo;s decision has come as a rude shock for the tribals. &ldquo;We are disappointed. But we will chalk out our plan of action soon,&rdquo; said Arun Pradhan, secretary of People&rsquo;s Front that has been at the forefront of the Nagri agitation.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Social activist Dayamani Barla spoke of the tribals&rsquo; right to proper livelihood. &ldquo;For the honourable court, it may be a matter of 50 years but for us it is more than that. Since ages, our ancestors have worked hard to turn this land into an agricultural one. Hundreds of families have relied on this land for their livelihood.
