Lodha and A.R. Dave also asked all state governments and Union territories to file replies to court notices issued in February 2011 for restricting such sales to prevent growing incidents of attacks on women.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">In April this year, the court had asked the ministry to co-ordinate with states to formulate a scheme for compensating victims.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Today&rsquo;s directives came during the hearing of a PIL filed in 2006 by a minor girl whose arms, face and other body parts were disfigured in an acid attack. The lawyer for the victim had sought a separate act or amendments in existing criminal laws such as the IPC, Indian Evidence Act and the CrPC for dealing with the offence, besides compensation.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The girl was attacked by three youths in Delhi after she refused to marry one of them. The three are being tried on the charge of attempt to murder. Two of them are out on bail.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The advocate said unauthorised acid sales should be forbidden because of the increasing number of attacks on women.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The Centre had earlier told the apex court that the report of the Law Commission on the issue had been circulated to all stakeholders and the National Commission for Women had drawn up a draft legislation to make acid attacks a serious offence.</div>               </font>

The three are being tried on the charge of attempt to murder. The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to apprise it of measures taken to regulate sale of acids to prevent their misuse as a weapon, particularly against women by jilted lovers.

The court sought a “comprehensive affidavit” from the Union home ministry, which had been asked to consider appropriate provisions for “regulation of sale of acid so that it is not easily or readily available to offenders”.

A bench of Justices R.M. Lodha and A.R. Dave also asked all state governments and Union territories to file replies to court notices issued in February 2011 for restricting such sales to prevent growing incidents of attacks on women.

In April this year, the court had asked the ministry to co-ordinate with states to formulate a scheme for compensating victims.
