Attack on Dalit Colonies: 'Cops Delayed in Taking Action'

Chennai: DMK today alleged that it was due to delay in taking proper action by police, violence let lose by caste Hindus at Dalit colonies in Dharmapuri district protesting an inter-caste marriage, in which more than 250 huts were set on fire earlier this month.

DMK had deputed a team headed by its Organising Secretary P V Kalyanasundaram to visit the three Dalit colonies that were attacked in the November seven incident and prepare a report.

The team after visiting various affected places in the last two days, in its report alleged that though the incident had occured around 4 pm, police and fire attenders arrived the villages after four hours.

"Due to the negligence of the police, a huge loss has occurred", the report, said.

Stating that the government announced compensation of Rs 50,000 each to the affected families was yet to reach many of them. The neighbouring villagers were 'panic stricken' after the incident, the report said.

Even for holding a conciliatory talks between the communities, the district administration was yet to appoint a committee, the report said.

A total of 268 houses were torched, 54 vehicles destroyed, jewels and valuables looted in the violence unleashed on November seven by the Caste Hindus after a man committed suicide over his daugther marrying a Dalit man of Natham Colony.
