                <div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Autistic people stand to benefit in terms of schooling, jobs and welfare projects if a new disability act that is being drafted is enacted into law.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995, does not include autism but the government plans to cover the condition in the revised act, accepting a longstanding demand from social activists.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Autism is now covered under the National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities Act, 1999.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Not being part of the disability act means autistic children get no concessions under the Right to Education Act and are entitled to free schooling only till the age of 14, like neurotypical (mentally normal) children.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">If the draft bill is approved and passed, the country&rsquo;s 40 lakh-odd autistic population will receive free education till the age of 18 and have access to special schools. The government will allocate funds for projects tailored to their needs and reserve jobs for them.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;The National Trust Act has set up a Rs 100-crore fund but most of the money has gone to address issues concerning cerebral palsy, mental disorder and pervasive development disorder. That autistic people look physically fit goes against them,&rdquo; said Sunaina Sahni, an activist who works with autistic children in Delhi.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The current definition of &ldquo;disability&rdquo; includes blindness, low vision, deformities caused by leprosy, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, mental retardation and mental illness.
