Auto shocker: Get set for a fare hike in Delhi -Rumu Banerjee

-The Times of India

Get ready for a hike in autorickshaw fares. After a spate of strikes by autorickshaw unions, the Delhi government is considering the recommendations of the committee set up to review fare hike. "The government is serious about the fare hike, especially as it has been some time since the last revision," said a source.

The transport minister, Ramakant Goswami, has been holding a series of meetings with the various autorickshaw unions over the past week, including one on Tuesday. The amount of hike is yet to be decided however, said officials.

The fare hike demanded by the unions is substantial. The base meter, which is Rs 19 at present for the first two km, will be hiked to Rs 20. After that, the meter reads Rs 6.50 per km, which the unions want to go up to Rs 9 per km. If that happens, a fare for a 10km journey — which is Rs 71 at the moment, will be a staggering Rs 92.

The unions have also asked for a fare revision for taxis. The hike demanded is from the current Rs 20 to Rs 25, with per kilometer fare being Rs 16 for non-AC taxis and Rs 19 for AC taxis. This is Rs 11 and Rs 13 respectively at present. The fares of economy cabs may get hiked as well, as unions want the Rs 10 per km service be upgraded to Rs 14 per km.

The autorickshaw unions have been demanding a fare hike for some time now. A committee that had been set up last year had rejected the demand, even as unions had alleged that the hike in CNG fares from 2010, when the last revision had taken place, has been steep. Unions have maintained that in 2010, the CNG price was Rs 21.9 which is now Rs 39.9. The government had in early March, set up another committee to look into fare revision, after the unions went on strike for two days, and insisted on partial strike after 4pm for a week.
