Bengal Prof gets notice over ‘anti-govt’ views-Rajib Chatterjee

The state higher education department has issued a notice to Bengal Government College Teachers’ Association general secretary and noted economist Debashis Sarkar, asking him to explain why he made “anti-government comments” on TV.

Sarkar, who teaches at Jhargram Raj College, is often invited to panel discussions on Bengali channels.

The notice was issued after a retired college teacher, Subrata Panda, wrote to Education Minister Bratya Basu on May 26 alleging that Sarkar had been speaking against the government and creating “academic disturbance”. Panda questioned if Sarkar had followed “prescribed democratic norms” that a government employee is bound to follow and demanded a probe.

“I received the show-cause letter yesterday. Being a government employee, I will follow instructions,” Sarkar said. On whether he is bound to take permission from the government before speaking to the media, Sarkar said: “Whatever I have to say, I will write it to the government.”

Asked if he had made any anti-government comment, Sarkar said: “I have my own opinion on the recent hike in petrol price. You may or may not accept my arguments. I don’t know which comment is anti-government and which one is pro-government.” Basu was not available for comment.
