That may help in clearing the huge backlog of cases here which hampers investigation and delivery of justice.</p><p align="justify">There were 8991 cases pending till the beginning of this year. The pendency was highest in the chemistry unit with 5433 cases. Though there are 337 sanctioned posts at FSL, a staggering 194 are lying vacant. This was revealed through an RTI filed recently.</p><p align="justify">The documentation department had 2038 cases pending, ballistic unit 102, DNA 862, physics 46, photo unit 26 and cyber unit 143. As a result, in a major case like that of Ponty Chadha, the crime branch is yet to get the ballistic reports.</p><p align="justify">The FSL investigations consist mainly of collection of samples of blood and semen along with gathering of swabs through slides. In cases where the identity of a deceased has to be established, DNA tests become important.</p><p align="justify">When the accused gets nabbed, his samples are matched with that of the victim. &quot;Forensic examination is now much advanced. A little spray on an accused's shirt will show clear signs of whether it has semen stains. As such, preparing a report does not take too long,'' says Dr Sudhir Gupta of AIIMS.</p><p align="justify">However, experts at FSL dismiss the allegations of any delay. &quot;We understand the importance of rape cases. The waiting time for important cases is not more than two weeks,'' said an administrative officer at Rohini.</p><p align="justify">The officer insisted that most of the backlog had been cleared, and that once the recruitments were over, delays will stop. &quot;Of course, certain units like the DNA unit need time to analyse complicated specimens,'' said a source.</p><p align="justify">The police though say that only a &quot;personal rapport'' at FSL gets the experts to complete the report within 10-14 days. ``Like any other important case, rape cases which hit the headlines are followed up by the DCP and ACP level officers. NEW DELHI: The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) at Rohini has begun a fresh round of recruitments. That may help in clearing the huge backlog of cases here which hampers investigation and delivery of justice.

As a result, in a major case like that of Ponty Chadha, the crime branch is yet to get the ballistic reports.</p><p align="justify">The FSL investigations consist mainly of collection of samples of blood and semen along with gathering of swabs through slides. In cases where the identity of a deceased has to be established, DNA tests become important.</p><p align="justify">When the accused gets nabbed, his samples are matched with that of the victim. &quot;Forensic examination is now much advanced. A little spray on an accused's shirt will show clear signs of whether it has semen stains. As such, preparing a report does not take too long,'' says Dr Sudhir Gupta of AIIMS.</p><p align="justify">However, experts at FSL dismiss the allegations of any delay. &quot;We understand the importance of rape cases.
