&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;The Prime Minister reiterated the government&#039;s deep concern for farmers welfare and assured that farmers&#039; interests are paramount and will be fully protected at all times,&amp;rdquo; the PMO said.&lt;br /&gt;

                <div align="justify">On the eve of a massive agitation by Tikait Singh-led Bhartiya Kisan Union, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met representatives of the Union and assured them that &ldquo;farmers interests will be fully protected at all times.&rdquo;<br /><br />The Prime Minister told the delegation that he would convene a joint meeting with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to have an in-depth discussion on the various issues raised by the BKU after the current budget session, a release from the Prime Minister's Office said.<br /><br />After the meeting, the Bhartiya Kisan Union decided to withdraw its agitation to lay an indefinite siege to Delhi from Wednesday to raise issues such as high input costs and acquisition of farm land for industrialisation among others. Mr. Pawar, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office V. Narayansamy, Planning Commission Member-Secretary Abhijit Sen and Agriculture Secretary P.K. Basu were present at the meeting .<br /><br />&ldquo;The Prime Minister's meeting was indirectly meant to make us withdraw our agitation. BKU members in thousands have already left for the Capital so, while we won't lay an indefinite siege to Delhi, we will hold a rally at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday,'' said Yudhvir Singh, all-India Secretary of BKU.<br /><br /><em>Issues<br /></em><br />The PMO said the BKU delegation raised a number of issues, including remunerative prices for farm produce, amendment to the Land Acquisition Act, four per cent rate of interest for loans other than crop loan, effective implementation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism, due consideration of sensitivities about Genetically Modified crops, protecting the interests of Indian farmers while engaging with the World Trade Organisation and Free Trade Agreements, health insurance for farmers, ensuring farmers' interests while framing the Seed Bill and separate budget for Agriculture like Railways.<br /><br />&ldquo;The Prime Minister reiterated the government's deep concern for farmers welfare and assured that farmers' interests are paramount and will be fully protected at all times,&rdquo; the PMO said.<br /><br />Dr. Singh told the delegation that every year before the budget, the government would bring out a report on the state of Indian agriculture. $disp = '<div align="justify">On the eve of a massive agitation by Tikait Singh-led Bhartiya Kisan Union, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met representatives of the Union and assured them that &ldquo;farmers interests will be fully protected at all times.&rdquo;<br /><br />The Prime Minister told the delegation that he would convene a joint meeting with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to have an in-depth discussion on the various issues raised by the BKU after the current budget session, a release from the Prime Minister's Office said.<br /><br />After the meeting, the Bhartiya Kisan Union decided to withdraw its agitation to lay an indefinite siege to Delhi from Wednesday to raise issues such as high input costs and acquisition of farm land for industrialisation among others. Mr. Pawar, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office V. Narayansamy, Planning Commission Member-Secretary Abhijit Sen and Agriculture Secretary P.K. Basu were present at the meeting .<br /><br />&ldquo;The Prime Minister's meeting was indirectly meant to make us withdraw our agitation. BKU members in thousands have already left for the Capital so, while we won't lay an indefinite siege to Delhi, we will hold a rally at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday,'' said Yudhvir Singh, all-India Secretary of BKU.<br /><br /><em>Issues<br /></em><br />The PMO said the BKU delegation raised a number of issues, including remunerative prices for farm produce, amendment to the Land Acquisition Act, four per cent rate of interest for loans other than crop loan, effective implementation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism, due consideration of sensitivities about Genetically Modified crops, protecting the interests of Indian farmers while engaging with the World Trade Organisation and Free Trade Agreements, health insurance for farmers, ensuring farmers' interests while framing the Seed Bill and separate budget for Agriculture like Railways.<br /><br />&ldquo;The Prime Minister reiterated the government's deep concern for farmers welfare and assured that farmers' interests are paramount and will be fully protected at all times,&rdquo; the PMO said.<br /><br />Dr. Singh told the delegation that every year before the budget, the government would bring out a report on the state of Indian agriculture. It would continue to strive to protect farmers' interests through the MSP mechanism.<br /><br />Regarding land acquisition, a separate meeting would be organised with Ministry of Rural Development and farmers' organisations.</div>'
