Blind People’s Association organises awareness programme on RTE-Ashwini Ramesh

-DNA

Blind People’s Association (BPA) on Friday organised an awareness programme on Right to Education (RTE) for physically and mentally-challenged people. The programme involved 25 district coordinators of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, parents of the differently-abled children and a few teachers, who discussed about lack of awareness about RTE at grassroot level.

The event consisted of various activities which discussed about admissions and special needs of differently-abled children. It highlighted problems faced by these children. The district coordinators told the parents that they should take certificates from doctors to avail facilities provided by the government for these special children.

The teachers spoke about introducing ‘inclusive’ teaching in schools. This means that schools should have comprehensive facilities like ramps, Braille and other unique teaching methodology for the visually-impaired and deaf people.

It was also suggested that children with multi-sensory impairment can avail the facility of home teaching which the government has introduced. Here, a teacher will once a week attend the impaired child’s home and teach him/her fundamentals of mathematics, science and social studies.
