Cancer to be one of the deadliest diseases of the coming decades: Lancet-Divya Rajagopal

-The Economic Times

It is not malaria or TB that will be the cause of large number of deaths in the world, Cancer is on its way to become one the deadliest diseases in the coming decades, according to a research paper published in medical journal Lancet.

The study lead by Dr Freddy Bay of International Agency for Research on Cancer, France, predicts that the number of cancer patients in the world is set to go up from 12.7million in 2008 to 22.2 million in 2030.

The study which tracked cancer incidents across 184 countries found that prostate, lung and liver cancers were one of the most common forms of cancer affecting men, whereas breast and cervical cancer were common among women.

"Rapid societal and economic transition in many countries means that any reductions in infection-related cancers are offset by an increasing number of new cases that are more associated with reproductive, dietary, and hormonal factors", said the research paper titled Global cancer transitions according to the Human Development Index (2008-2030): a population-based study.

Cancer Pattern

In rich countries breast, lung, bowel, and prostate cancers were cause of 50 percent of overall cancer burden, whereas in medium income regions, cancers of the throat, stomach, and liver were common. These seven cancers comprised 62% of the total cancer burden in medium to rich countries, the study found. In countries with low human development index cervical cancer was more common than both breast cancer and liver cancers.

Causes of Cancer

30% of cancer deaths in the world are beacause of lifestyle disorders like obesity, poor diet, tobacco and alchohol consumption, according to the World Health Organisation. WHO says that 71% of the global population died of lung cancer, caused of tobacco consumption.

Prevention

The study suggests that though the occurances of cancer varies in different regions, there is a need for targeted interventions that can help reduce the projections, which includes "Effective primary prevention strategies, with the implementation of vaccination, early detection, and effective treatment programmes" aimed at attacking the disease.
