Five states - Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan - accounted for over 50% of the country's road deaths in 2012.</p><p align="justify">The number of lives lost in crashes in these states was over 70,000 out of the total 1.38 lakh deaths. Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh alone account for almost 24% of the country's road fatalities with each reporting over 16,000 deaths during the calendar year.</p><p align="justify">&quot;We are asking all states and particularly those reporting high number of deaths, injuries and crashes to take measures including traffic rule enforcement, removing liquor vends along national highways, notifying speed limits, streamlining issuance of driving licences and to have a robust emergency rescue system to save lives,&quot; said joint secretary (transport) Sanjay Bandopadhyaya at an event organized by International Road Federation (IRF).</p><p align="justify">The latest road accident report shows five states - Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, MP, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh - account for over 55% share of total accidents. $disp = '<div align="justify">-The Times of India</div><p align="justify"><br /><em>NEW DELHI: </em>The Centre wants states reporting large number of road fatalities, injuries and accidents to focus on road safety to improve the country's performance as the United Nations has set a target of reducing deaths by 50% during this decade. Five states - Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan - accounted for over 50% of the country's road deaths in 2012.</p><p align="justify">The number of lives lost in crashes in these states was over 70,000 out of the total 1.38 lakh deaths. Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh alone account for almost 24% of the country's road fatalities with each reporting over 16,000 deaths during the calendar year.</p><p align="justify">&quot;We are asking all states and particularly those reporting high number of deaths, injuries and crashes to take measures including traffic rule enforcement, removing liquor vends along national highways, notifying speed limits, streamlining issuance of driving licences and to have a robust emergency rescue system to save lives,&quot; said joint secretary (transport) Sanjay Bandopadhyaya at an event organized by International Road Federation (IRF).</p><p align="justify">The latest road accident report shows five states - Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, MP, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh - account for over 55% share of total accidents. Tamil Nadu leads with nearly 67,800 accidents. &quot;We need to fix defects in design and poor upkeep of roads to reduce accidents No road should be allowed for vehicles until its found safe for use,&quot; IRF president K K Kapila said.</p><p align="justify">Other road safety experts urged a nodal body for road safety issues. Even World Health Organization has pushed for this.</p><p align="justify">&quot;We will soon have an autonomous agency for road safety - national road safety board,&quot; said road transport secretary Vijay Chhibber. The ministry will soon take the matter to Cabinet for its approval. He added the agency will have charter, institution and mechanism in place to meet its financial requirements.</p><p align="justify">The Centre has called a meeting of state transport ministers on Monday to dwell upon these issues and to lay the roadmap to reduce fatalities. The roadmap for Decade of Action was finalized recently by the road transport ministry almost three years after India became a signatory to the UN call to reduce accidents, injuries and deaths across the globe.</p>'
