Hiremath said that the ICFRE had crossed its brief by recommending mining in Western Ghats, one of the 18 hot biodiversity spots in the world. Similarly, there was no rationale in cutting down the production of ore by 40 per cent.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The EIA that recommended reduction in production of iron ore to 25 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from its peak of 41.5 million tonnes argued that this quantity along with augmented supplies from other districts would be sufficient to meet the needs of Karnataka, which is pegged by officials at 30 million tonnes.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">However, Chairman, study team, NCPNR, Vishnu Kamath was of the opinion that 25 million tonnes was too high a figure after the colossal environmental degradation in the district.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div>               </font>

Hiremath said that the ICFRE had crossed its brief by recommending mining in Western Ghats, one of the 18 hot biodiversity spots in the world.
