Contaminated IV drip kills 12 pregnant women in 10 days

Contaminated intravenous fluid has killed at least 12 pregnant women at Jodhpur's government-run Umaid Hospital in the last 10 days, according to hospital and police sources. Four more women were in a serious condition and had to be put on ventilators on Thursday.

The hospital administration lodged a criminal case against the IV fluid manufacturer, Parental Surgical India Pvt Ltd (Indore), and the local distributor, Anshul Pharma, on Thursday as the deaths were attributed to the IV fluid.

Jodhpur police have booked the two companies under IPC Section 328 (putting a person's life under threat) and seized the unused bottles of the fluid. Police said as many as 5,000 bottles of the suspected batch of IV fluid were supplied to three government hospitals at Jodhpur. How many of these bottles have been used was still being ascertained. Umaid Hospital administration sent fluid samples to a microbiology lab, which has reported that three of the five samples showed presence of bacteria. The health department later banned the brand across hospitals. ''We have begun our investigations and are checking the suspected stocks,'' said Jodhpur police commissioner Bhupendra Kumar Dak.

A two-member team sent by Rajasthan government reached Jodhpur on Thursday and started a parallel probe. The team checked its operation theatre, labour room and wards and held discussions with the six-member committee constituted by the S N Medical College administration. The hospital first reported deaths of six pregnant women between February 13 and 16, following which the medical and health minister A A Khan visited the hospital.
