Police sub-inspector of Vyara police station, S H Bava, was nabbed red-handed by anti-corruption bureau (ACB) officials for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a NREGA misappropriation accused here on Sunday. Bava had demanded money for not requesting for further remand of the accused from the court to investigate the case.
Kanji Chaudhary, post master of Pathakwadi village, and Sapna Chaudhary, sarpanch of the village, had been arrested on Wednesday by Bava for allegedly siphoning off money meant to be distributed among NREGA beneficiaries. The accused were remanded in police custody for three days on Thursday by a local court. On behalf of Kanji, Navin Soma Patel negotiated with Bava not to torture the former during the remand for which the police official demanded Rs 10,000 of which Rs 3,000 had been paid. He was requested to reduce the bribe amount. Bava agreed and asked that Rs 5,000 be given to him. Bava threatened Navin that if the money was not paid he will demand that the remand period of the accused be extended. Navin then contacted the ACB officials.
Bava had asked Navin to come at old bus station in Vyara with money. When Navin paid the money to the police official, within few minutes ACB officials arrested Bava with the bribe money.
