Countrywide screening for a 'silent killer'

-The Telegraph 300,000 indians to be checked for high blood pressure in global drive New Delhi: A nationwide public health campaign will seek to screen more than 300,000 people across India for high blood pressure this month as part of a second global initiative to detect undiagnosed hypertension, a disorder doctors often call a "silent killer". The campaign, called May Measurement Month 2018 and launched on Wednesday, will highlight the need for timely diagnosis and adequate control of hypertension amid concerns that large proportions of patients remain undiagnosed or poorly treated, physicians associated with the initiative have said. Several thousands of doctors across India are expected to participate in the campaign coordinated by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Association of Physicians of India. It will offer "opportunistic screening" for hypertension to patients and members of the public. "Hypertension is a silent killer, but it remains undiagnosed, untreated, or poorly controlled in many patients," Balaram Bhargava, a senior cardiologist and director general of the ICMR, said. Earlier studies have suggested that about half of patients with hypertension remain undiagnosed, half of those diagnosed do not receive adequate treatment, and half on treatment are unable to control their hypertension. A similar campaign conducted by the PHFI during May 2017 had screened some 280,000 adults across India and found about one-third suffering from hypertension. But 50 per cent of this third were unaware of their condition until the measurements were taken, said Arun Jose, coordinator of the campaign at the PHFI. The May Measurement Month campaigns are part of a global initiative by the International Society of Hypertension, an alliance of doctors, clinicians and researchers that had screened over one million people for hypertension across 80 countries last year.
