Deficit rain likely to hit agriculture -Siraj Mohammad

-The Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Odisha received 17% deficit rain during the monsoon from June to August-end triggering fear that the scenario may affect agriculture operations.

The state received 755 mm rain by August-end compared to normal rainfall of 912mm, the Met sources said.

The IMD report said deficit rainfall continued in the state for three successive months. In June and July, the deficit stood at 19% and 24% respectively. In August, the rainfall fell short by 13%, the IMD report said.

A close look on rainfall statistics further revealed that at least 12 of 30 districts in the state are reeling under deficit rain by August-end. The districts, which witnessed major deficit during the period, and their per cent are Deogarh (47), Balangir (41), Sonepur (35) and Bargarh and Jharsuguda (30 each). The other districts, which registered deficit below 30% include Sambalpur, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Kalahandi and Sundargarh.
