Delhi can’t send forces for polls

-The Telegraph

Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said today that New Delhi had turned down the state's request for 300 companies of central forces for the panchayat elections.

Mamata said the Centre's inability to spare forces was the reason that held her back from making such a request that was necessitated by a court ruling.

But sources in the state election commission said the state had done "too little, too late" and the panel might move the high court to seek further directives.

Senior government officials said if the court allowed the commission to increase the number of phases from the prescribed three, the polls could be held by the deadline of July 15 with the available forces.

The chief minister said: "You see why we were not asking for central forces. We had asked for 300 companies.... I've heard that they are laughing at us there (at the Centre). There has never been any central force in any local election."

According to a deployment plan drawn up by the high court, the requirement stood at 1.18 lakh personnel for the first phase on July 2, with a deficit of over 700 companies of police personnel.

The commission had been demanding 800 companies of central forces.
