Delta Farmers Slowly Turn to SRI Technique -R Lenin

-The New Indian Express

CHENNAI: SRI is a process of paddy cultivation that requires less water and gives robust yield. But since it is different from the traditional method of sowing, it took a lot of persuasion and perseverance to draw farmers towards it.

The diffidence now appears to be waning as close to 50 per cent of the delta areas of Tiruchy district are expected to opt for SRI for Samba sowing this year.

While the projected Samba sowing in this part of the delta is 87,250 acres, around 44,000 acres are expected to come under SRI.

"In the beginning, farmers were wary about SRI because of lack of awareness. Government officials convinced them that this new method would produce high yield," says Puliyur Nagarajan, member, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (Agricultural Wing) and an awardee for best performance using SRI method in 2011 at the district level. SRI, he claims, would provide 8-12 bags more yield per hectare than the conventional method of cultivation.
