Desalination plant a panacea to water-starved coastal village -DJ Walter Scott |
-The Hindu
450 families at the mercy of private tankers heave a sigh of relief RAMANATHAPURAM (Tamil Nadu): Commissioning of a desalination plant has not only eased drinking water scarcity but also enhanced its quality to the people of Mullimunai, a coastal village. As the village could not benefit from the Cauvery Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme, about 450 families were left at the mercy of private tankers, who sold water at the rate of Rs. 5 a pot. The villagers had been buying water till January when the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSIR-CSMCRI) put an end to their agony by commissioning the plant. "The village had no drinking water source and the plant has come as a huge relief for us," B. Ravindran, village president, said. "A small plant with 10,000 litres a day capacity was commissioned in 2004, partly meeting the water needs, but it was closed in 2006. Since then, we were struggling for the basic need," he said. The Rs. 1.4-crore plant, designed, fabricated and installed by CSIR-CSMCRI, with funding from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and infrastructure provided by the district administration and the local village panchayat, has the capacity to supply one lakh litres a day, official sources said. The construction of the plant, taken up during 2009-10, could be completed early this year only for various reasons. The project progressed after the present Collector, K. Nanthakumar, made available infrastructure facilities. "We have erected the plant within a short span of 25 days after the district administration made available the building and other infrastructure," sources said. A seven-member team from Bhavnagar in Gujarat camped here for 15 days and commissioned the plant.
