It comes to about Rs 800 a day and up to Rs 12,000 for a three month season,&quot; says Arun Tatki who sold his pair for as little as Rs 30,000.<br /><br />Owning their own pair, however, allowed farmers a year-round supply of fertilizer in the form of cow-dung.<br /><br />Also, for any farmer, bullocks are a form of financial security. This is why farmers are dismissive of the state's plans to set up cattle shelters. &quot;I spent Rs 60,000 buying the bullocks. Should I give them away free to a cattle-shelter? I need to recover some of my money,&quot; says Gaunekar.<br /><br />By evening, the cows and bulls that remain in the village are let loose to forage for fodder. Farmers can no longer afford to feed them. 'We let them go to the nearby fields and forest. They return a day or two later. We cannot look after them,&quot; says Balki.<br /><br />When the pola festival comes in August, Dahegaon may have very few bulls left. Pola is a major festival in Maharashtra, where farmers adorn their bullocks with ornaments and worship them. &quot;This year, we will have to perform the pola puja with hired bulls,&quot; says Gaunekar.</div>'

-The Times of India YAVATMAL: The first thing that strikes you about Dahegaon village is its run-down and abandoned bullock-carts. They can be found lying outside most huts, with their paint peeling off, almost frozen in time. The animals which used to operate the carts are no longer there. Nearly half the village of 5,000 people sold has off its bullocks over the last few months, says sarpanch S M Balki. The drought and unseasonal rains had destroyed crops and drained finances, sharpening a long-running agrarian crisis. "Sales peaked in March, when bank instalments have to be paid," says Balki.
