                <p align="justify"><font ></font></p><p align="justify"><br /><font >The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) on Food Security will have to wait for formal views from the National Advisory Council (NAC) before its next move on the government&rsquo;s promise to legislate a National Food Security Act. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >The EGoM, which is scheduled to meet Friday, chaired by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, did not list the Bill on its agenda for the meeting. While officials claimed that this was because Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, was out of the country, sources said that the EGoM would like to wait for the opinion of Sonia Gandhi-led NAC before proceeding further. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >The EGoM had asked the Planning Commission in April to work out the poverty figures before the issue was discussed any further. Though Ahluwalia was learnt to have informally made presentations to some senior EGoM members like Pranab Mukherjee, P Chidambaram, and Sharad Pawar some time ago, he has still not officially briefed the EGoM. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >Meanwhile, the NAC has also started consultations with stakeholders on the subject in the run up to its full meeting scheduled for July 1. As part of these consultations, officials from the Department of Food are likely to brief the NAC about their views on the proposed legislation on Friday. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >The EGoM may also discuss issues related to wheat and sugar in the wake of the prevailing price situation in the country. The meeting is likely to consider a proposal for open market sale of about 50 lakh tonnes of wheat over the next 10 months. In addition, the meeting is also slated to discuss a proposal to reduce the sugar levy quota imposed on private sugar mills from the current 20 per cent of their produce to 16 per cent.<br /></font></p>               </font>

The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) on Food Security will have to wait for formal views from the National Advisory Council (NAC) before its next move on the government’s promise to legislate a National Food Security Act. The EGoM, which is scheduled to meet Friday, chaired by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, did not list the Bill on its agenda for the meeting. While officials claimed that this was because Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, was out of the country, sources said that the EGoM would like to wait for the opinion of Sonia Gandhi-led NAC before proceeding further. The EGoM had asked the Planning Commission in April to work out the poverty figures before the issue was discussed any further. Though Ahluwalia was learnt to have informally made presentations to some senior EGoM members like Pranab Mukherjee, P Chidambaram, and Sharad Pawar some time ago, he has still not officially briefed the EGoM. Meanwhile, the NAC has also started consultations with stakeholders on the subject in the run up to its full meeting scheduled for July 1. As part of these consultations, officials from the Department of Food are likely to brief the NAC about their views on the proposed legislation on Friday. The EGoM may also discuss issues related to wheat and sugar in the wake of the prevailing price situation in the country. The meeting is likely to consider a proposal for open market sale of about 50 lakh tonnes of wheat over the next 10 months. The move is aimed to help control food inflation and create additional storage for foodgrains in the country. In addition, the meeting is also slated to discuss a proposal to reduce the sugar levy quota imposed on private sugar mills from the current 20 per cent of their produce to 16 per cent.
