Encourage ryots to take multi-variety crops: Scientist

-The Times of India

NAGPUR: Farmers in Vidarbha should be encouraged to cultivate a variety of crops so that they could get a bigger market for their produce. In addition to this, promotion of organic farming will help in increasing the yield and curb farmers' suicides, said Vandana Shiva, a well-known scientist and environmentalist, on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference at Tilak Patrakar Bhavan, Shiva said, "Farmers and citizens of our country are being targeted by multinational fertilizers companies whose business runs into trillions of dollars. The highly poisonous fertilizers that the farmers are forced to purchase are not only hazardous for crops but also taking a heavy toll on citizens as they become prone to various diseases after eating the produce." Increase in diseases like autism, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's and many others is a result of these poisonous fertilizers, Shiva added.

The environmentalist advised farmers not to buy seeds from outside. Instead, they should develop their own seed banks and use them. Use of organic seeds from such banks will increase production and improve economic condition of farmers, she said.
