                <p align="justify"><font >Demanding equal educational opportunities for all children, a large contingent of people walked to Bal Bhavan here this past Friday in support of three key demands on the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. December 11 was the day India ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) to demand the right to education for every Indian child. </font></p><p align="justify"><font >Regretting that millions of children in India still do not have access to education, Child Rights and You director Puja Marwaha said: &ldquo;Seventeen years after India ratified the UNCRC, millions of children in India still do not have access to good quality education. We at CRY marked this occasion with a national campaign in which more than 7.70 lakh people from 18 States have signed a charter demanding equal quality education for all Indian children. We now want the government to accept these demands as voices from the ground and act upon making education a right for every child.&rdquo;</font></p><p align="justify"><font >The group also included children who were earlier employed in various sectors and some who worked as labourers. &ldquo;Till recently I was breaking stones in a quarry. I was admitted to school by NGO Sanchetna. It&rsquo;s important for every child to go to school, not be working,&rdquo; said 13-year-old Mahendra Rajak from UP.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Eminent economist Jean Dreze, who was also part of the contingent, said: &ldquo;The current Act does not hold anyone liable for children not being in school, at the most the parents are held responsible. There&rsquo;s no punitive action taken for schools not coming up, not functioning properly. The Act without proper groundwork to make education a reality will remain a paper tiger.&rdquo; </font></p><p align="justify"><font >Activist-advocate Ashok Aggarwal said the Act needs to be equally applicable on private schools. He alleged that the Act seems to pave way for privatisation in education and is contrary to the common school system.. The activists claimed that from the point of view of India&rsquo;s children, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 is limited in its scope. &ldquo;It needs three key amendments -- include children below six years as well as 15 to 18 years in the Act, ensure a complete education for every child below the age of 18 years and prevent drop-outs, especially for girls.&rdquo; <br /></font></p>               </font>

We at CRY marked this occasion with a national campaign in which more than 7.70 lakh people from 18 States have signed a charter demanding equal quality education for all Indian children. 'Equal quality education for all kids'

Demanding equal educational opportunities for all children, a large contingent of people walked to Bal Bhavan here this past Friday in support of three key demands on the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. December 11 was the day India ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) to demand the right to education for every Indian child. Regretting that millions of children in India still do not have access to education, Child Rights and You director Puja Marwaha said: “Seventeen years after India ratified the UNCRC, millions of children in India still do not have access to good quality education. We at CRY marked this occasion with a national campaign in which more than 7.70 lakh people from 18 States have signed a charter demanding equal quality education for all Indian children. We now want the government to accept these demands as voices from the ground and act upon making education a right for every child.” The group also included children who were earlier employed in various sectors and some who worked as labourers. “Till recently I was breaking stones in a quarry. I was admitted to school by NGO Sanchetna. It’s important for every child to go to school, not be working,” said 13-year-old Mahendra Rajak from UP. Eminent economist Jean Dreze, who was also part of the contingent, said: “The current Act does not hold anyone liable for children not being in school, at the most the parents are held responsible. There’s no punitive action taken for schools not coming up, not functioning properly. The Act without proper groundwork to make education a reality will remain a paper tiger.” Activist-advocate Ashok Aggarwal said the Act needs to be equally applicable on private schools. He alleged that the Act seems to pave way for privatisation in education and is contrary to the common school system.. The activists claimed that from the point of view of India’s children, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 is limited in its scope. “It needs three key amendments -- include children below six years as well as 15 to 18 years in the Act, ensure a complete education for every child below the age of 18 years and prevent drop-outs, especially for girls.”
