On Monday, when her mother stepped out of the house, Karthika ended her life in a noose.

Bullying - sometimes with tragic consequences - is more prevalent than we think. A recent study by research agency IMRB and ParentCircle, has revealed that every third child is bullied in school. The pan-India study covered 2,700 respondents, with parents and children in equal number.

While principals of several schools acknowledged the occurrence of bullying within the institution premises, they said that the reported number could be an exaggeration. "Bullying has been prevalent in schools for several years now," said Hindu Senior Secondary School principal J Srinivasa Raghavan. "But it is not as often as the survey shows." Modern Senior Secondary School principal K Mohana concurred with Raghavan.

"It is important to consider what comes within the definition of 'bullying'," said Shefali Vaidya, principal of National Public School, Bangalore. "Teasing among friends often gets misconstrued as bullying."

Counsellors, meanwhile, did not play it down. Magdalene Jeyarathnam, of East West Centre for Counselling said she is not surprised by the survey results. "While bullying is quite common in schools, it is not addressed actively by parents and institutions," she said. Nalina Ramalakshmi, founder, Shri Harini Media and ParentCircle, expressed concern over the results. "These are problems faced by most parents. With increased migration, we are seeing changes in family structure and an accelerated trend towards nuclear families," she said.

Clinical neuropsychologist Dr B S Virudhagirinathan agreed with Ramalakshmi's views. "Children have become very sensitive these days.

Recounting a recent incident in a Chennai school where a Class 2 girl was roughed up by a few of classmates, she said the school and other parents coerced the girl's mother to keep silent and not initiate an active discussion in social forums.

According to Jeyarathnam and other counsellors, children who bully others in school are generally victims of bullying at home. "The environment at home tends to carry on to school and the child does not know how to deal with the pent up anger," said Jeyarathnam.

Bullying was present earlier too. However, with nuclear families, the notions of compromise and adjustment are not part of a child's life. Parents become overly possessive, and shadow their children without letting the child be. This does not help in empowering the child," says the doctor.

The survey also says that one in every third child felt that they are always compared to others. One in every fourth child lied about his/ her grades to parents. Jeyarathnam attributes the child's dishonesty to the unintentional pressure that parents put on them. "Parents should refrain from getting involved in daily academics; they may ask a neighbor or a tutor to handle it. This would give time for the parent to focus on building a relationship with the child," she advises.

The survey results were announced at the sidelines of the launch of , a knowledge sharing platform to connect parents, educators and experts across fields to share and collaborate on different aspects of parenting.

', 'credit_writer' => 'The Times of India, 3 September, 2015, http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Every-third-child-is-bullied-in-school-shows-study/articleshow/48781789.cms', 'article_img' => '', 'article_img_thumb' => '', 'status' => (int) 1, 'show_on_home' => (int) 1, 'lang' => 'EN', 'category_id' => (int) 16, 'tag_keyword' => '', 'seo_url' => 'every-third-child-is-bullied-in-school-shows-study-ranjani-ayyar-4677141', 'meta_title' => null, 'meta_keywords' => null, 'meta_description' => null, 'noindex' => (int) 0, 'publish_date' => object(Cake\I18n\FrozenDate) {}, 'most_visit_section_id' => null, 'article_big_img' => null, 'liveid' => (int) 4677141, 'created' => object(Cake\I18n\FrozenTime) {}, 'modified' => object(Cake\I18n\FrozenTime) {}, 'edate' => '', 'tags' => [ [maximum depth reached] ], 'category' => object(App\Model\Entity\Category) {}, '[new]' => false, '[accessible]' => [ [maximum depth reached] ], '[dirty]' => [[maximum depth reached]], '[original]' => [[maximum depth reached]], '[virtual]' => [[maximum depth reached]], '[hasErrors]' => false, '[errors]' => [[maximum depth reached]], '[invalid]' => [[maximum depth reached]], '[repository]' => 'Articles' }, 'articleid' => (int) 29087, 'metaTitle' => 'LATEST NEWS UPDATES | Every third child is bullied in school, shows study -Ranjani Ayyar', 'metaKeywords' => 'Child Rights,Schools,Bullying', 'metaDesc' => ' -The Times of India CHENNAI: When R Karthika, a Class 10 student of a school in Kodungaiyur complained of bullying, virtually nobody took her seriously.

CHENNAI: When R Karthika, a Class 10 student of a school in Kodungaiyur complained of bullying, virtually nobody took her seriously. On Monday, when her mother stepped out of the house, Karthika ended her life in a noose. Bullying - sometimes with tragic consequences - is more prevalent than we think. A recent study by research agency IMRB and ParentCircle, has revealed that every third child is bullied in school.
