Ex-Team Anna members plan new movement against corruption by Sunny Sebastian |
“It will be an apolitical, secular movement with a pro-poor slant” A new group of crusaders against corruption is likely to emerge after a meeting at the Gandhi Peace Foundation in Delhi this Friday. Some of the former members of the India Against Corruption movement's core group, including Waterman Rajendra Singh, land rights activist P.V. Rajagopal, Medha Patkar and Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey are likely to attend the meeting which will focus on justice for India's rivers. “An anti-corruption movement should be above party politics. Our effort is to rid the country of corruption and we are starting with the rivers. Most of India's rivers have become drains. They are subjected to exploitation, pollution and encroachment,” said Rajendra Singh, who was in the Shekhawati region this weekend to address the Fifth Dalmia Water Environment Award 2011 function in Jhunjhunu district's Chirawa town. “This will be an apolitical, secular movement with a pro-Dalit and pro-poor slant,” said Mr. Singh, who quit the core group of India Against Corruption in protest against Anna Hazare's stand on the Lok Sabha by-election from Hisar. “Everyone who has been working for about a quarter-century on the issues of ‘jal, jangal, jameen' (water, forest and land) is getting together. The basic issues involved are related to protecting the common property rights of people,” he said. However, Mr. Singh, whose exit from the core committee along with Mr .Rajagopal had created ripples in activist circles, was quick to point out that this would not be a movement running parallel to Anna's. “This will complement it. We will cooperate with them as we all stand for a corruption-free India,” he said. “The Lokpal Bill does not speak of what has happened to India's rivers. It is quiet on common property and community land given away by the Government to business people. Once the industrial units are closed the plots are converted into real estate and sold off to someone else,” he pointed out. “The Lokpal Bill is only an entry point to fight the multifarious acts of corruption in the country,” Mr. Singh added. The Waterman, who has been leading a campaign to save the Yamuna and Ganga from pollution, said the group would identify potential areas of large-scale corruption and prepare a model action plan for cleaning up the system of corrupt practices. “The attempt will be to generate a mass awakening against corruption that goes beyond the Jan Lokpal. Suggestions on corruption-free practices would be made during the campaigns,” he said. “We are confident that once the nation's polluted rivers are restored to their original pristine glory and land and water rights are restored to the people, we will have a corruption-free India,” Mr. Singh said. |
