Fall in groundwater levels in some dists cause for concern: Report

-The New Indian Express

HYDERABAD: While the last few months were filled with optimism as groundwater levels in the state were being reported to be better due to good monsoon rains in 2016, same is not going to be the case now.

As per the July groundwater report released by Telangana State Groundwater Department (TSGWD) groundwater levels have already started to fall in some districts, while in many districts it is just slightly better than last year July.Fall in groundwater levels in July this year as compared to July 2016 has been recorded in Medchal, Adilabad, Nirmal, Mancherial, Asifabad and Bhupalapally districts.

With monsoon rainfall this year already showing signs of decline, it raises the concerns further regarding groundwater recharge.

As per the TSGWD report, ‘deficit’ rainfall has already been reported from the districts of Adilabad, Jayashankar, Medak, Peddapalli, Komrambheem, Nizamabad, Nirmal, Jagtial and Mancherial.

In eighteen districts rainfall is just slightly close to the ‘normal’ levels and only in four districts it is above normal. The state as a whole received 336 mm (millimeter) rainfall against the normal of 372 mm, which is 10 per cent less than normal.

The TSGWD report stated, “The recharge to ground water has been limited to a few localised areas in the state due to less rainfall during July 2017 resulting in a meager improvement in the water levels.”

The average groundwater level for Telangana as whole for July 2017 stood at 10.57 meters below ground level (mbgl), whereas it was 13.40m in July 2016, indicating a rise of 2.83 mbgl. Groundwater levels in Hyderabad, however, is better than most districts.
