New Delhi: Indian farmers, the majority of whom rely on monsoon rainfall to water their crops, are desperately trying to reach out for help even as the spectre of drought looms over several parts of the country.

As many as 1.11 million farmers from across the country called the agriculture ministry's Kisan Call Centre (KCC) helpline in June. Over 450,000 of the calls went unanswered. The number of landed calls is expected to reach 1.6 million in July, of which the number of unanswered calls could swell to more than 60%.
