The demands also include right to decide the rate of the land-to-be-acquired should be given to the affected farmers. </font><br /><br /><font >Tevatia had shot into fame by leading farmers' movement against Yamuna Expressway township at Tappal in Aligarh in August this year. The agitation was withdrawn after state government assured to meet all demands of the farmers and scrapped the township project. Farmers on indefinite hunger stir

Farmer leader Manveer Singh Tevatia on Monday announced that he along with his supporters will sit on a fast unto death at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi from December 1 in support of their demands to amend the Land Acquisition Act 1894 and to implement UP government's new land acquisition policy with retrospective effect from 1997. The demands also include right to decide the rate of the land-to-be-acquired should be given to the affected farmers. Tevatia had shot into fame by leading farmers' movement against Yamuna Expressway township at Tappal in Aligarh in August this year. The agitation was withdrawn after state government assured to meet all demands of the farmers and scrapped the township project. However, earlier this month, the state government decided to revive the township and offered farmers to compensate as per its new land acquisition policy which safeguards farmers' interest. tnn In this period, Tevatia tried twice to revive the movement but was arrested by the state government on one pretext or another. He claimed that he was offered money and even threatened. "As state government is not allowing us to air our grievances, we have decided to stage fast unto death in Delhi," he told TOI. He claimed that initially 11 farmers will sit with him on the fast and later more will join from Gautambudhnagar, Aligarh, Agra, Mathura and Ghaziabad. Farmers said that their demands are addressed both to the state and the Central government. From state government farmers want benefits of the new land acquisition policy of the state government with retrospective effect. As per the new policy, there will be no forced acquisition, farmers will get annuity of Rs 20,000 per acre along with an yearly increase of Rs 600 per year till 33 years and those not willing to take annuity will paid in full among other things. From the Central government, farmers want amendment in the archaic land acquisition law made during the colonial rule. The bill proposing amendment is pending in the Parliament since long. "Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi had assured us that UPA government will table the amendment bill in the parliament in the winter session. Similar, promise was then made by the prime minister, Manmohan Singh. But nothing has been done so far," they said.
