PUNE | NEW DELHI | KOLKATA: Despite the forecast of a deficient monsoon, coupled with its poor start, farmers are trying to maximise their returns. Choosing the crops that have high market prices is their strategy, shows the meager sowing taken place so far in the regions that have received monsoon and pre-monsoon showers. Crops like pulses, groundnut, chillies, onions, whose market rates have been ruling high, are the most preferred crops so far. Planting of pulses has started in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Nagaland, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

"Sowing has been done on less than one lakh hectare area. But it is expected to pick up from next week," said K Madhusudhana Rao, Andhra Pradesh's commissioner for agriculture. "The initial trend is indicating farmers' inclination towards groundnut and pulses."
