According to the latest data presented by the government in Parliament during the recently concluded monsoon session, as many as 2,90,740 farmers committed suicide during 1995-2011 due to various reasons, including bankruptcy or sudden change in economic status and poverty. The data has been quoted from the National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) latest annual report on suicides, ADSI-2011 (accidental death and suicides in India). As many as 152 farmer suicides were reported till August 2012 as against 14,027 during the entire period of last calender year, as per the latest government data.
