Flash flood situation at many places in Punjab, Haryana

Several places in Punjab and Haryana face flash flood situation in the wake of heavy downpour, which also resulted in "low flood" conditions in some areas along Yamuna and Sutlej rivers in the two states. The in-flow at Yamuna river near Hathni Kund barrage in Yamunanagar district of Haryana was at 1.3 lakh cusecs of water, officials said, adding it was considered to be a "low flood" condition.

Some 60 villages along Yamuna and Sutlej embankments in Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat, Palwal, Ferozepur, Patiala and Ropar districts of the two states are facing flash flood situation due to heavy rains, officials said here. The authorities had issued a red alert in the villages and as precautionary measure residents of some villages along embankments of Yamuna had been shifted to safer places, they said.

Meanwhile, heavy downpour at several places in Punjab and Haryana inundated all low lying areas besides disrupting normal power supply. While Chandigarh was drenched by 122.1 mm of rainfall, Ludhiana received 37.7 mm of rains.

Among other places, Rohtak had 28.6 mm of rains followed by 24 mm at Patiala, 15.4 mm at Amritsar, 11.8 mm at Hisar and 8.2 mm at Bhiwani, the Met office said. The Met forecast "very heavy rains" at a few places in the region during the next 48 hours.
