The gushing water has scared the residents of Aurangabad, Rohtas, Arwal, and parts of Bhojpur and Patna districts, where deluge is rare.

In fact, flood had so far been a phenomenon of north Bihar districts with the Kosi, Mahananda, Adhwara and several other rivers emanating from Nepal causing recurring floods in Madhubani, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura, Supaul and Katihar districts.

Nitish, who had a high-level meeting with the senior officers of the water resources and disaster management departments, was virtually surprised to learn that the Sone had never received such huge volume of water after 1975. The secretary of the water resources department, Afzal Amanullah, told the chief minister that the central Bihar was under the flood threat after over three decades.

The chief minister carried out aerial survey of the Indrapuri barrage and adjoining areas with experts. He directed the officials from the engineering as well as administrative sides to maintain round-the-clock vigil on the embankments. He also directed the officials to step up relief work in the affected areas.

Sources in the water resources department said the volume of water released from Vansagar dam was usually over 6000 to 12,000 cusecs per annum during the rainy seasone. “The sudden release of over eight lakh cusecs of water has caused a disastrous situation. Flood fear in central Bihar |
-The Telegraph
Chief minister Nitish Kumar today conducted an aerial survey and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams rushed to the central Bihar districts for rescue operations after over 8.39 lakh cusecs of water was suddenly released from the Vansagar dam in Madhya Pradesh.
The water released from the MP-based dam has put enormous pressure on the Indrapuri barrage in Rohtas and several places on the embankment along the river Sone. We are, obviously, not prepared for the eventuality,” said a senior engineer of the water resources department. There has been no casualty yet, but Amanullah said parts of Aurangabad, Arwal, Patna, Rohtas and Bhojpur districts were affected because of water spilling over to the villages in the districts along the Sone. A group of villagers are reported to be trapped on a hillock in Arwal. The NDRF team airdropped on the hillock was busy rescuing them at the time of filing this report. To the relief of the officials and the people, the water level of the Sone slightly receded towards the evening hours. Sources revealed that there was over 7.7 lakh cusecs of water in the Sone at 5pm against over 8.39 lakh during the morning hours. The pressure on the Sone embankments was still enormous, though. The Vansagar dam, a bone of contention between Bihar and Madhya Pradesh for decades, had released over five lakh cusecs of water by yesterday evening itself in the Sone. Patna High Court is slated to hear a PIL on the issue on September 19. The officials said the pressure on the Sone might cause flood in the catchments areas of the Ganga also. Reasone: the Sone merges with the Ganga between Maner and Haldi Chhapra. The rise in the water level of the Ganga could pose flood threat in Bhagalpur, Chhapra, Begusarai, Khagaria and Vaishali districts. |
