Fog hits supply, egg prices up

Fog not only delays trains and flights, causes road accidents and makes the winter season depressing but also causes the prices of eggs to rise. The recent increase in egg prices is attributed to fog and the prices are likely to increase again as soon as the visibility drops. To add to that, onions and tomatoes are also becoming more expensive.

According to Shabir Ahmed, secretary, Poultry Federation of India, eggs usually become expensive during the winter due to an increase in their demand. If transportation gets affected due to fog, prices go up even further. "Three days back the cost of eggs was Rs 333 for 100 eggs in the wholesale market. On Friday, the rate had come down to Rs 317. Three months back the rate was Rs 275-280 for 100 eggs. The rate has come down now because the fog has lifted and it is easier to transport them to UP, Bihar and Assam - which are the biggest consumers. If the fog returns, egg prices will go up again," he said.

Although onions became a little less expensive because of the government's intervention, their prices are now witnessing an upward trend. From Rs 45 a kg till a week back, they now costs about Rs 50-60 a kg in the retail market. The wholesale market has also seen an increase in prices from Rs 20.25 per kg at the start of the month to Rs 31.71 a kg on Friday. "The problem of shortage still persists since the crop got ruined in the rain. When the government stepped in, it pumped more onions in the market but that has to be a sustained effort. Also, farmers in Rajasthan and Gujarat are getting the same price there that there were getting here. Hence, they are selling their stocks in other states," said Brahm Yadav, chairman, Delhi Agricultural Board.

The good news, at least on the wholesale front, is that the market will be flooded with a fresh crop of tomatos, carrots, peas, etc in the first week of January, leading to a fall in prices. "While there is not much problem with tomatoes at present, there are reports that they are being exported to neighbouring countries and that will lead to a shortage soon. Other vegetables like carrots and peas, which were not in season so far, were also expensive since the starting crops were planted late this year. Now that local supply will start, their rates are expected to fall," said Yadav.

However, Delhiites were not so upbeat. "Prices of everything are rising. Tomatoes, peas and onions have become more expensive in the last five days. Milk prices just went up while eggs also became expensive. Fuel prices are also very high. Year 2010 has been horrible for the general public. Retailers are fleecing0 us, but the government has failed to take any action to bring sown the prices," said Atishee Mehra, a housewife in Mayur Vihar.
