Noting that the higher production was likely despite partial crop damage due to drought in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal and adverse weather conditions in parts of the country, Mr. Pawar said the growth in agriculture sector would be about 5.4 per cent.&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;ldquo;We wanted to reach four per cent growth rate last year, but there was drought. However, we have reached 5.4 per cent growth in agriculture and allied sectors because of efforts of farming community, extension workers and scientists,&#039;&#039; he said.&lt;br /&gt;

In the second advance estimates for 2010-11, rice output is expected to be 94.01 million tonnes against 89.09 million tonnes last year, wheat is likely to be 81.47 million tonnes compared to 80.80 million tonnes last year and pulses output is expected at 16.51 million tonnes against 14.66 million tonnes. The coarse cereals output at 40.08 million tonnes are also set to exceed last year&#039;s level of 33.55 million tonnes.Among the non-food crops, the oilseeds output is likely to be 27.84 million tonnes this year against 24.88 million tonnes last year, cotton is expected to be 33.9 million bales of 170 kilograms each against 24.2 million bales last year, while sugarcane production is likely to be 336.69 million tonnes against 292.3 million tonnes last year.&lt;br /&gt;

                <div align="justify">With higher sowing of wheat, pulses, sugarcane, cotton and oilseeds reported this rabi season, there are expectations of a bumper crop production this year.<br /><br />The total food grains output is expected to be 232.07 million tonnes, which is only marginally lower than the record production of 234.47 million tonnes in 2008-09.<br /><br />Announcing the second advance estimates of food grains production for the 2010-11 crop year last week, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar described farmers' performance as &ldquo;exceptional.'' &ldquo;We are likely to achieve record production of wheat (81.47 million tonnes), pulses (16.51 million tonnes) and cotton (33.9 million bales of 170 kg each) this year,'' he said.<br /><br />Noting that the higher production was likely despite partial crop damage due to drought in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal and adverse weather conditions in parts of the country, Mr. Pawar said the growth in agriculture sector would be about 5.4 per cent.<br /><br />&ldquo;We wanted to reach four per cent growth rate last year, but there was drought. However, we have reached 5.4 per cent growth in agriculture and allied sectors because of efforts of farming community, extension workers and scientists,'' he said.<br /><br />In the second advance estimates for 2010-11, rice output is expected to be 94.01 million tonnes against 89.09 million tonnes last year, wheat is likely to be 81.47 million tonnes compared to 80.80 million tonnes last year and pulses output is expected at 16.51 million tonnes against 14.66 million tonnes. The coarse cereals output at 40.08 million tonnes are also set to exceed last year's level of 33.55 million tonnes.Among the non-food crops, the oilseeds output is likely to be 27.84 million tonnes this year against 24.88 million tonnes last year, cotton is expected to be 33.9 million bales of 170 kilograms each against 24.2 million bales last year, while sugarcane production is likely to be 336.69 million tonnes against 292.3 million tonnes last year.<br /><br />Mr. Pawar attributed the bumper production to &ldquo;focussed interventions'' through Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna, National Food Security Mission, Accelerated Pulses Production Programme, higher credit and above all, &ldquo;the resilience shown by farmers.'</div>               </font>

With higher sowing of wheat, pulses, sugarcane, cotton and oilseeds reported this rabi season, there are expectations of a bumper crop production this year. The total food grains output is expected to be 232.07 million tonnes, which is only marginally lower than the record production of 234.47 million tonnes in 2008-09. Announcing the second advance estimates of food grains production for the 2010-11 crop year last week, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar described farmers' performance as “exceptional.'' “We are likely to achieve record production of wheat (81.47 million tonnes), pulses (16.51 million tonnes) and cotton (33.9 million bales of 170 kg each) this year,'' he said. Noting that the higher production was likely despite partial crop damage due to drought in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal and adverse weather conditions in parts of the country, Mr. Pawar said the growth in agriculture sector would be about 5.4 per cent. “We wanted to reach four per cent growth rate last year, but there was drought. However, we have reached 5.4 per cent growth in agriculture and allied sectors because of efforts of farming community, extension workers and scientists,'' he said. In the second advance estimates for 2010-11, rice output is expected to be 94.01 million tonnes against 89.09 million tonnes last year, wheat is likely to be 81.47 million tonnes compared to 80.80 million tonnes last year and pulses output is expected at 16.51 million tonnes against 14.66 million tonnes. The coarse cereals output at 40.08 million tonnes are also set to exceed last year's level of 33.55 million tonnes.Among the non-food crops, the oilseeds output is likely to be 27.84 million tonnes this year against 24.88 million tonnes last year, cotton is expected to be 33.9 million bales of 170 kilograms each against 24.2 million bales last year, while sugarcane production is likely to be 336.69 million tonnes against 292.3 million tonnes last year. Mr. Pawar attributed the bumper production to “focussed interventions'' through Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna, National Food Security Mission, Accelerated Pulses Production Programme, higher credit and above all, “the resilience shown by farmers.'
