Fresh-produce prices spike 15% on farmers' stir; MP worst hit

-The Hindu Business Line

New Delhi: The prices of vegetables have gone up by 10 to 15 per cent in some cities as farmers belonging to a coalition of 104 farmer organisations have stopped supplying vegetables and milk to urban areas sporadically hitting their availability.

“The impact of the farmer agitation is more or less felt in 7-8 States, mostly in the north and central India,” said K V Biju, national coordinator of Rashtriya Kisan Mahasangh (RKM), the coalition which called for the 10-day Gaon Bandh agitation.

However, many farmer organisations in Punjab decided to call off the strike onWednesday, after paying tributes to six farmers who were killed in police firing in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh on June 6 last year, an agency report said.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar, on the other hand, came out in support of agitating farmers, urging them to continue their stir still the demands are met.

Pawar said cultivators have been forced to take to the streets as promises made by the government to them have not been fulfilled. “I support the agitation as a farmer,” the former Union Agriculture minister told reporters in Mumbai. But, he urged the protesters not to throw farm produce on roads and instead give it to the poor.

According to Biju, the impact was most felt in Madhya Pradesh. The operations in most mandis were affected on Sunday, even though the State police kept a number of them opened on Monday, he claimed.
